Start with the irritation, not the room
A cupboard catches every morning. A handle turns in your palm. The curtain fitting you meant to sort out still sits on the windowsill. None of these things looks like a renovation. Together, they can make a home feel permanently unfinished.
The most useful repair list is not the longest one. It is the one that separates what matters from what merely happens to be visible. Walk through your home once, with your phone, and record the things that interrupt an ordinary day. A clear photograph and a plain description are more useful than a confident diagnosis. “The door rubs here” tells us more than “it needs new hinges”.
Give your list three levels
Put everyday obstacles first: a loose handle, a cupboard that will not close, a fitting that has become awkward to use. Then list improvements, such as an extra hook or a shelf. Finally, add the optional jobs you would like done if the agreed time allows.
Safety concerns sit outside that queue. Stop using an unstable or hazardous item and explain the problem before booking. A handyman visit is not a substitute for an emergency response or a specialist assessment of gas, electrical or structural problems.
Your planning checklist
- Priority: what is affecting normal use?
- Next: what would make the room work better?
- Optional: what can wait without making the problem worse?
- Separate: what needs specialist advice before anyone starts?
Two hours is a booking length, not a promise
Hello Handy’s standard rate is £38 per hour for one handyman, £70 for two and £100 for three, with a two-hour minimum. That makes a standard two-hour visit £76, £140 or £200 respectively. The £75 minimum visit charge does not reduce the £76 two-hour calculation.
Evening visits after 6pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday visits carry a 10% uplift. The estimate depends on the team and time selected; the final bill is based on time actually spent. Agree materials and any additional requirements before work begins.
There is no responsible way to promise a particular number of repairs in two hours without seeing the details. A missing part, damaged fixing point or previously altered fitting can change the job. Ask which tasks are realistic, and agree what happens if the first repair takes longer than expected.
Prepare the route as carefully as the repair
In a Brentford apartment, access might mean a concierge, a lift and a permitted unloading place. In a Twickenham terrace, it might mean moving through a narrow hallway. These are planning examples, not assumptions about every address: tell us how your own home works.
Clear the affected area, rather than turning the whole house upside down. Empty the cupboard being repaired; move breakables from the shelf nearby. Keep replacement parts with the relevant item, still in their packaging if possible, and photograph product labels before they are hidden again.
If you rent, check any permissions needed for the proposed work. Do not assume a small job is exempt because it takes little time. A new hole in a wall and an adjustment to an existing cupboard are different requests.
Send a brief someone can act on
A useful request might read: “Two kitchen cupboard doors catch, one bedroom handle is loose, and I would like two hooks fitted if time allows. Photos attached. First-floor flat, one flight of stairs; replacement handle already purchased.” This is an example brief, not a customer testimonial.
Finish with your postcode, access information, preferred date and the number of hours you are considering. At the end of the visit, check the agreed jobs together and note anything that needs a part or a return appointment. A successful home reset is not a rushed list of ticks: it is fewer daily frustrations and a clear next step for whatever remains.
Your planning checklist
- Photograph each job close up and in its surrounding space.
- List replacement parts and product details.
- Confirm access, permissions and priorities.
- Keep optional work separate from the essentials.
